Matthew Farina is an American artist and children’s book author.
His book, Lawrence in the Fall (Hachette), won an Ezra Jack Keats Honor for writing and was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called the book, “a subtly powerful story of agency and independence.”
Cow and Sow will be published in 2026 by Tundra/Penguin Random House.
Matthew has exhibited his paintings and collage works throughout the United States, including exhibits at Samsøn (Boston), Sears-Peyton Gallery (NYC), Painting Center (NYC), HallSpace by Nonneta (Eldred, NY), and the Print Center (Philadelphia). Previously, Matthew was an arts writer for Hyperallergic, the Brooklyn Rail, and artcritical.
Matthew is also a higher education executive at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He received a doctorate in educational leadership and innovation from New York University’s Steinhardt School; an MFA in Art Criticism & Writing from the School of Visual Arts; a BFA in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania; and a four-year certificate in printmaking from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA).
Matthew lives in New York City and in the woods of Sullivan County, Upstate New York.
